The Importance of Outdoor Play in the Early Years
Building Strong Foundations Through Outdoor Learning
At our provision, we recognise the vital role that outdoor play has in supporting children’s learning and development. The outdoors offers children opportunities to explore, investigate, take risks, and develop the physical skills they need for both school and everyday life.
Outdoor learning is much more than simply spending time outside. It provides rich experiences that support all areas of development while helping children build confidence, resilience, and independence.

Developing Gross Motor Skills
One of the greatest benefits of outdoor play is the development of gross motor skills. These are the large movements that use the muscles in the arms, legs, and core and include running, jumping, climbing, balancing, throwing, and kicking.
Within our provision, children have daily opportunities to challenge themselves physically through a range of activities and outdoor experiences. These opportunities help children develop:
- Strength and muscle control
- Balance and coordination
- Spatial awareness
- Agility and movement skills
- Confidence in their physical abilities
These skills are essential building blocks for future learning and development.
Why Gross Motor Skills Matter
Gross motor development plays an important role in preparing children for school. Before children can sit comfortably at a table, concentrate for extended periods, or develop the fine motor skills needed for writing, they first need strong core muscles, good posture, and body control.
Regular outdoor play helps children develop the physical foundations needed to:
- Sit comfortably and maintain concentration
- Develop pencil control and handwriting skills
- Participate confidently in physical activities
- Manage everyday self-care tasks independently
- Access learning opportunities with confidence
By strengthening these skills during the early years, children are better prepared for the challenges and expectations they will encounter as they move through their educational journey.
Learning Across the EYFS
Outdoor play supports all seven areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Children develop communication and language skills as they talk about their experiences, solve problems together, and share ideas. They build personal, social, and emotional skills through teamwork, turn-taking, and overcoming challenges. Mathematical concepts emerge naturally through counting, measuring, comparing, and exploring patterns in the environment.
The outdoor environment also encourages children to develop curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Supporting Wellbeing
Spending time outdoors has many benefits for children’s wellbeing. Fresh air, physical activity, and opportunities to connect with nature can help children regulate their emotions, improve their mood, and support their overall mental health.
Outdoor experiences also encourage children to take manageable risks, make decisions, and develop confidence in their own abilities.
A Key Part of Our Provision
Outdoor learning is an integral part of our provision and is valued as an important learning environment. We believe that children learn best when they are active, engaged, and able to explore the world around them.
By providing meaningful outdoor experiences every day, we are supporting children to develop the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills they need to thrive both now and in the future.
